Beena Jaswal is a registered clinical counsellor and has been working in the mental health services field for 25 years. She has worked in two different health authorities and has a wide range of experience in working with people with mental illness, substance use, and those who are underserved such as on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. She has worked in tandem with the Criminal Justice System and Corrections in various roles and contract positions as well as with mental health teams and Victim Services with the RCMP. She completed her Masters degree at City University. Her specialties are in working with folks who need help with anxiety, depression, family therapy, addiction/substance use, borderline personality disorder and with victims of domestic abuse. Coming from a strong ethnic community, she really enjoys working with people from a South Asian background. Beena currently works full time as a counsellor with the Fraser Health Authority and she has a small private practice. In addition, she works as a Clinical Supervisor with Moving Forward Family Services supervising graduate students for their counselling master’s degree. Her main approaches to counselling are using strength based, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), (based on the work done by Marsha Linehan). Learning counselling through a trauma informed practice has really shaped Beena’s work from her own personal experiences with the South Asian culture, family addiction to substance use, and the trauma of experiencing racism and bullying as a young person.
